Ariz. - Paul M. Petelin, Sr., M.D., is the newest member of the Arizona Medical Board. The board certified Phoenix surgeon graduated from the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska after receiving his bachelor‘s degree in chemistry from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Dr. Petelin completed his internship and residency at St. Joseph‘s Hospital and Maricopa Medical Center in Phoenix.
Dr. Petelin says he‘s excited about being on the Board. He views it as a challenge and as a way “to apply more than 30 years of experience” in medicine.
On two separate occasions, Dr. Petelin has been Chief of Surgery at St. Joseph‘s Hospital. Currently, he is in his second term as Governor of the State of Arizona American College of Surgeons. Dr. Petelin is a member of the Boards of Directors of the Arizona Medical Association and the Phoenix Surgical Society. He is a past president of the latter organization.
Dr. Petelin has received honors based on commendations from his patients and peers. “Phoenix Magazine” has selected him as one of its “Top Docs” five times since 1995, including the present year. And he was named one of America‘s Top Surgeons in 2004-2005.
Governor Janet Napolitano nominated Dr. Petelin for a five-year term on the Arizona Medical Board. The State Senate will vote on his nomination during the next Legislative session.
Eight of 12 members of the Arizona Medical Board are physicians. The other four are public members, one of whom must be a registered nurse. The Board licenses and regulates more than 17,500 allopathic physicians, and the offices are located at 9545 East Doubletree Ranch Road in Scottsdale.
