Ariz. - A four-member subcommittee of the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants held a kickoff meeting on August 24, 2005 to begin discussing the direction the Board may want to take in formulating and establishing rules for physician assistants who do minor surgery.
Chaired by Randy D. Danielsen, Ph.D., P.A.-C, the subcommittee talked about having a standing committee of the Board to decide specific cases. Dr. Danielsen and other members, Albert Ray Tuttle, P.A.-C, Michael E. Goodwin, P.A.-C, and Peter C. Wagner, D.O., then approved a motion to have Board staff research the issue of a standing committee.
The Board‘s Executive Director, Timothy C. Miller, suggested the subcommittee involve stakeholders early in the process. Mr. Miller said their input will make for a better rule with fewer changes.
Dr. Danielsen said he wants to stay away from a “cookbook list” of approved procedures. Miller recommended the subcommittee develop broad rules on minor surgery. Miller said the Board would want to clearly define what is not minor surgery.
PA Tuttle stated the rule is necessary to protect the public, physician assistants and the Board. The next meeting of the subcommittee will take place after the regular meeting of the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants on Wednesday, November 16.
